For an eighth-grade woodshop assignment, Kevin built a scale model of a house out of corrugated cardboard, using the corrugate textured surface to represent the Spanish tile roof he imagined was just the right touch for that design. While the aesthetic might not have been spot-on, it was a choice that reflected using materials in an honest and appropriate manner. So it comes as no surprise that when the late John Sugden, a professor at the University of Utah Graduate School of Architecture, asked “What does a brick say when you ask it what it wants to do?” Kevin knew the answer–it sits there.

When not pondering the inner thoughts of clay masonry, Kevin is a passionate fan of soccer and music–in particular music that involves improvisation. He thinks that practicing architecture, playing soccer and music, at the highest levels, all involve similar elements: brilliant talent, playing as a team, and improvising in the moment.

Kevin is GSBS’ President. He says his job description is: “I say yes when someone asks, have you got a minute.” He counts the Speed Skating Oval for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, Salt Lake City’s Public Safety Building and the renovation of the Historic Union Pacific Depot amongst the most interesting projects of his career. Kevin has also served on the American Institute of Architects’ Contract Documents Committee for more than 14 years, and was elevated to Fellowship of the AIA for his leadership in that arena.
