The McKay Building integrates the WSU College of Education with the Melba S. Lehner Children’s School and a charter kindergarten. The higher-ed space in this building is intended to mimic the type of classroom space that the teachers in training will experience in their future professional careers. The Children’s School is a school within a school and is separated from the higher education spaces with its own secure circulation, entry, and aesthetic, however, it can be seen from the college spaces and is designed as a learning tool for teachers, with observation spaces into every classroom. These distinct uses are also reflected on the exterior. A colorful, interactive outdoor learning space connects with the Children’s School on one side of the building while the opposite side relates directly to the WSU campus. The entire renovation reflects the vision of “Creating a place that celebrates students engaged in collaborative learning through open-minded exploration, imagination, empowerment, and experimentation.”
